Web 2.0 -- Interactive Tools

Students and teachers share in knowledge and content creation on the "new web" ---

Web 2.0 is a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. With these advanced capacities, a second generation of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and collaborative tagging (folksonomies) are evolving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0.

What Are Students Creating?

What is a Podcast?  Students create and use a script to record information about what they are studying. Then the recording is posted on these pages to listen to or save. It's like a radio broadcast on your computer!! Here are a few sample links for real school podcasts:

What is a Video Cast? Students create and use a script and plan a sequence (story board) to film on digital video cameras to show what they are doing with projects and information. Then the video is posted on these pages to view or save. It's like a TV broadcast on your computer!!

Here are a few sample links for real school videocasts:

YouTube; SchoolTube or TeacherTube are all great places for Video sharing

What is a WIKI? Students and teachers write topics and information in web pages that can then be used  to add answers or more information. A WIKI is interactive...students or teachers can post questions, answer questions, make comments and edit other information on the pages. Writing, editing, and analyzing skills are all enhanced in a very creative, real-world way! A WIKI is like a "live" magazine on your computer!!

Blogs

More than comments and short answer...a blog allows for content passages with expanded thoughts and ideas and live web links, as well as pictures and video embedding. The blog entries are compiled and saved and can be viewed by month, date or topic search.

"Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; ... A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. ... As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112 million blogs.[1]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

Forums

Forums are -

... Online discussion modules for asynchronous, topic-oriented  communications.

"An Internet forum is a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content. Internet forums are also commonly referred to as Web forums, message boards, discussion boards, (electronic) discussion groups, discussion forums, bulletin boards, fora (the Latin plural) or simply forums. The terms "forum" and "board" may refer to the entire community or to a specific sub-forum dealing with a distinct topic. Messages within these sub-forums are then displayed either in chronological order or as threaded discussions "... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum
